Some time ago, humans started to make tools. Then we made symbols, which are tools for the mind. [1] [2] Some symbols are functional and some are semantic. Alphabets are practical, and maths is operational. [3] [4] [5] There is also a class of symbols that are loosely discernible, and have more aesthetic intentions.
Aesthetic symbols play a role similar to poetry, exercise and antidepressants. They target shared and stable parts of the human experience, and can affect mood. [6]
Now that we have had these symbolic tools for tens of thousands of years, they are also able to reach across time. This helps us remember human dreams that might otherwise be forgotten. [7] [8]
